FAQ
Straight answers about building decks in Asheville and Western North Carolina.
It depends on three things: size, material, and how high off the ground it sits. A simple ground-level wood deck and a two-story composite deck are two very different projects. That is why we give free on-site estimates: we measure, talk through options, and give you real numbers.
A wood deck that gets regular care can last 15 years or more. Composite boards like Trex and TimberTech often carry warranties of 25 years or longer. Our wet mountain climate is hard on wood, which is why many homeowners here choose composite. We build both and will give you an honest take on what fits your budget.
Many decks in Asheville and Buncombe County do require one, depending on size, height, and structure. You do not have to deal with it: if your project needs a permit, we handle the paperwork with the city or county for you.
Wood costs less up front and looks classic. Composite costs more at the start and asks for almost nothing after: no staining, no sealing, no rotten boards. If you plan to stay in your home for years, composite usually wins the math. If budget is the priority, treated wood is still a solid deck. We build both.
It depends on the frame. If the structure underneath is solid, we can often repair boards or resurface the top for much less than a replacement. If the frame itself is failing, repairs just delay the inevitable. We will get underneath, look hard, and tell you which one it is.
